How this test works
No installs, no accounts, no uploads.
This tool uses your browser's built-in getUserMedia and Web Audio APIs to talk directly
to your microphone and camera hardware. When you click "Start," your browser asks your permission,
then streams audio and video locally so you can see and hear that everything works. That stream is
never sent to a server — this page has no backend, so there is nothing to upload to in the first place.
Closing the tab or clicking "Stop" immediately releases your microphone and camera.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Why can't my browser detect my microphone?
Usually one of three things: the site was never given microphone permission, the wrong input device is selected at the operating-system level, or another app (like a video call already in progress) is holding the microphone exclusively. Check your browser's site permissions, close other apps that might be using the mic, and confirm the right device is selected in your system sound settings.
My webcam shows a black screen — what's wrong?
A black preview usually means camera permission was blocked, the camera is already in use by another application, or a physical lens cover/privacy shutter is closed. Grant camera access when prompted, close other apps that might be using the camera, and double-check for a lens cover.
Does this site record or store my audio and video?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, transmitted, or saved — refreshing or closing the tab ends the test completely and releases the devices.
How do I allow microphone or camera access in Chrome or Firefox?
Click the lock or camera icon in the address bar, open Site settings, and set Microphone and Camera to Allow, then reload the page. If you previously selected Block, you'll need to change it manually — browsers won't prompt again automatically once blocked.
I don't hear anything during the speaker test — what's wrong?
Start with the basics: check your system volume isn't muted or turned all the way down, and confirm the correct output device is selected in your OS sound settings — this trips people up constantly when Bluetooth or USB headphones are connected but the system is still routing audio elsewhere. Also check the browser tab itself isn't muted (right-click the tab in Chrome to check), and try a pair of wired headphones if you have them, to quickly tell whether it's a speaker hardware problem or a settings/routing problem.
Will this work before a Zoom, Google Meet, or Discord call?
Yes — this is a quick way to confirm your hardware works before joining a call, independent of any single app's settings. If it works here but not in your call app, the issue is usually the device selected inside that specific app, not your hardware.
Does the Record & Playback tool save my voice anywhere?
No. The recording is held only in your browser's memory as a temporary file, never transmitted or uploaded anywhere. It disappears the moment you refresh or close the tab, unless you explicitly click "Download Recording" to save a copy to your own device.
